Aston Villa finally ended their 30-year trophy drought after a dominant 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the Europa League final on Wednesday night in Istanbul.
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers sealed a famous triumph for Aston Villa as the Premier League side lifted their first major trophy since the 1996 League Cup.
The victory also delivered Villa’s second major European title, 44 years after the club won the European Cup in 1982. Nine members of that legendary squad were present at Besiktas Park to witness another historic night for the Midlands club.
Manager Unai Emery once again underlined his reputation as one of Europe’s greatest knockout competition specialists by winning his fifth Europa League title.
Emery arrived at Villa Park in November 2022 with the club sitting just above the Premier League relegation zone after replacing Steven Gerrard. Less than four years later, he has transformed Villa into Champions League regulars and now Europa League winners.
Villa supporters, including Prince William, celebrated wildly at the final whistle after watching their side produce a composed and ruthless display against the Bundesliga outfit.
The English side started brightly and nearly took an early lead through Rogers, whose effort was denied by Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. Freiburg briefly threatened through veteran midfielder Nicolas Hofler, but Villa soon took complete control of the contest.
Tielemans opened the scoring four minutes before half-time with a sensational volley following a cleverly worked short corner routine. The Belgian midfielder, who also scored the winner for Leicester City in the 2021 FA Cup final, produced another big-game moment on the European stage.
Villa doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time when Buendia curled a stunning strike into the top corner from outside the box, leaving Freiburg with an uphill task heading into the second half.
Any hopes of a comeback disappeared just before the hour mark when Rogers poked home Buendia’s dangerous near-post delivery to make it 3-0 and confirm Villa’s superiority.
Villa could easily have added more goals as Amadou Onana struck the post while Buendia also missed another excellent opportunity, but the damage had already been done.
The triumph marks a watershed moment for Aston Villa, who have experienced a dramatic rise under Emery. A decade ago the club suffered relegation from the Premier League, but they are now among England’s elite once again.
Villa have already secured qualification for next season’s Champions League after finishing inside the Premier League top five, and the Europa League success further strengthens their growing status in European football.
Emery insisted the club’s ambitions do not end with this trophy and praised both the owners and players for supporting the project.
The Spaniard has now delivered exactly what he promised when he joined the club — silverware and European success.
For Villa fans, the scenes in Istanbul will forever rank among the greatest nights in the club’s history alongside the famous 1982 European Cup triumph.
A new generation of heroes has now written its own chapter.
