Football Kenya Federation has launched a strategic campaign to recruit foreign-born players eligible to represent Harambee Stars, with a delegation currently touring Europe to persuade diaspora talent to commit to the national team.

The delegation is led by FKF vice president McDonald Mariga and includes FKF National Executive Committee member Yusuf Abdallah as well as Harambee Stars team manager and data analyst Nicodemus Kimanthi.

Kenya has a growing pool of footballers born abroad who qualify to play for the country through their Kenyan heritage. However, many of these players have yet to pledge their international futures to Harambee Stars, with some still weighing their options between Kenya and other nations.

FKF believes engaging the players directly will help address their concerns and encourage them to represent the country. The federation is particularly keen to strengthen the national team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host alongside East African neighbours.

The success of many African nations that have integrated diaspora players into their national teams has highlighted the importance of tapping into talent developed in Europe and North America. FKF hopes a similar strategy will help Harambee Stars build a competitive squad capable of performing strongly at AFCON 2027.

Among the players already approached is 19-year-old winger Andre Gitau, who was born in the United States and currently plays for German club FSV Mainz 05 II. Gitau has represented the United States at youth levels including the U16, U17, U18 and U20 teams but has not yet made a senior appearance, leaving him eligible to switch allegiance to Kenya.

The FKF delegation hopes the outreach will convince several eligible players to commit to Harambee Stars in the coming months.

Some of the targeted players could receive their first national team call-ups for the upcoming FIFA Series tournament scheduled to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, from March 23 to March 31.

The mini-tournament will feature Kenya, Estonia, Grenada and hosts Rwanda and is expected to provide Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy with an opportunity to assess new players as he continues building a squad capable of competing at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

For FKF, securing commitments from diaspora players could significantly boost the depth and quality of the national team as preparations for the continental showpiece intensify.
