De Frutos Double Powers Rayo Past Oviedo in Vallecas Rout
- Jorge de Frutos struck twice as Rayo Vallecano dismantled Real Oviedo 3-0 at Estadio de Vallecas.
- A first-half opener, an early second-half penalty, and Alvaro Garcia’s clinical finish sealed a comfortable LaLiga win for the hosts.
Rayo Vallecano turned on the style in Vallecas on Wednesday night, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Real Oviedo with Jorge de Frutos leading the charge through a brace that killed the contest either side of half-time.
The scoreline might suggest it was smooth from the first whistle, but the opening stages had the usual edge of a league battle, with Rayo pushing aggressively while Oviedo tried to settle and play through spells of pressure. It didn’t last long.
Rayo kept forcing corners, kept squeezing Oviedo into their own half, and eventually found the breakthrough in the 44th minute. After sustained pressure, the ball broke kindly inside the area and De Frutos reacted fastest, finishing from point-blank range to make it 1-0 just before the break.
That goal changed the mood completely. Instead of Oviedo regrouping at half-time, Rayo came out with even more intent and doubled their lead within five minutes of the restart.
In the 48th minute, Alvaro Garcia drove into the box and was brought down, with Lucas Ahijado penalised for the foul. De Frutos stepped up and made no mistake, burying the penalty low into the corner in the 50th minute to put Rayo firmly in control at 2-0.
Oviedo tried to respond with changes and a few bursts forward, including attempts from Nicolas Fonseca and Thiago Borbas, but Rayo never looked like a side willing to relax. Augusto Batalla was sharp when called upon, and the hosts continued to threaten whenever they moved the ball quickly into wide areas.
Any lingering hope for Oviedo was completely extinguished in the 62nd minute. Alvaro Garcia, already heavily involved, finished brilliantly from a tight angle on the left, drilling a low shot into the bottom corner for 3-0.
From there, the match became a question of game management for Rayo and damage limitation for Oviedo. The home side remained organised, won their duels, and kept the ball smartly when the moment demanded it. Oviedo had moments where they threatened to at least grab a consolation, but their best efforts were either blocked in a crowded box or comfortably dealt with by Batalla.
The final whistle confirmed a commanding performance from Rayo, who took their chances and punished Oviedo’s mistakes with real efficiency. De Frutos was the clear standout, delivering a match-winning brace, while Alvaro Garcia’s energy and end product ensured the hosts never let the visitors back into the game.
For Oviedo, it was a harsh night in Vallecas, one where they struggled to cope with Rayo’s pressure and looked short of answers once they fell behind.
