AFC Leopards reignited their FKF Premier League title ambitions after securing an important 2-1 win over Mara Sugar at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

The victory saw Ingwe move to 58 points, reducing the gap between themselves and league leaders Gor Mahia to six points with the title race entering a crucial stage.

AFC Leopards headed into the encounter under pressure following two straight defeats. Their recent struggles included a narrow 1-0 loss to rivals Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji Derby before suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat against Kenya Police FC.

Mara Sugar, however, arrived in Nairobi in strong form after winning three of their previous four matches, including impressive victories over Tusker FC and Kariobangi Sharks.

Ingwe started the match brightly and immediately took control with aggressive attacking football and quick passing combinations. Their positive approach paid off in the 13th minute when Hassan Beja produced a brilliant finish to give AFC Leopards an early advantage.

The goal lifted the confidence of the home side as they continued to dominate possession and stretch Mara Sugar’s defence with dangerous attacking movements. Their midfield remained energetic throughout the first half while the forwards constantly searched for openings in the final third.

Despite AFC Leopards’ dominance, Mara Sugar stayed competitive and looked threatening on the counterattack. The match changed in the 28th minute after Dennis Cheruiyot was fouled inside the penalty area, forcing the referee to point to the spot.

Drona Openda stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to level the scores and hand Mara Sugar a lifeline after a difficult opening spell.

The equaliser boosted the visitors’ confidence as they began growing into the game with dangerous forward runs and improved transitions. AFC Leopards were forced to remain alert defensively as Mara Sugar pushed for another goal before halftime.

After the break, AFC Leopards returned with renewed urgency and attacking intent. They increased the pressure on Mara Sugar with sustained attacks and quick movement in the final third.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 60th minute when Victor Omune found the back of the net with a composed finish to restore Ingwe’s lead and send the Nyayo Stadium crowd into celebration.

Mara Sugar made several attacking changes in an attempt to rescue the match, but AFC Leopards defended resolutely in the closing stages to secure all three points and keep their championship hopes alive.
