Gor Mahia were forced to postpone their FKF Premier League title celebrations after battling to a 1-1 draw against Kenya Police FC on Sunday evening at Nyayo National Stadium.

K’Ogalo came into the clash under pressure after rivals AFC Leopards reduced the gap at the top of the table to six points following their victory over Mara Sugar on Saturday.

The record league champions were aiming to restore their nine-point advantage and move a step closer to clinching their 22nd league title, but a resilient Kenya Police side frustrated them in a tense encounter.

The visitors stunned the home crowd in the 22nd minute when Brian Otieno handed the Law Enforcers a deserved lead.

The move started from an Eric Zakayo free-kick that struck the defensive wall before falling kindly to Yves Koutiama. His blocked effort landed perfectly for Otieno, who calmly slotted past goalkeeper Byrne Omondi to silence the Gor Mahia supporters.

The first half was fiercely contested, with referee Chris Kavanagh frequently called into action to calm tempers.

Paul Ochuoga became the first Gor Mahia player booked, while Lawrence Juma and Kenya Police defender Hernest Malonga also received yellow cards before halftime following heated exchanges.

Despite trailing, Gor Mahia nearly found an equaliser in first-half stoppage time when Ebenezer Adukwaw connected with an Ochuoga cross, forcing a brilliant save from Police goalkeeper Daniel Ogembo.

Kenya Police continued to threaten after the break and wasted two excellent opportunities to put the game beyond Gor Mahia’s reach.

Substitute Clinton Kinanga was first to squander a golden chance in the 64th minute after finding himself in a dangerous position inside the area, only to shoot directly at Byrne Omondi.

Ten minutes later, Edward Omondi produced an excellent through ball for the pacey Eric Zakayo, but the winger also failed to beat Omondi after firing straight at the Gor Mahia goalkeeper.

Those missed opportunities eventually proved costly for the visitors late in the match.

With four minutes remaining, Shariff Musa delivered a dangerous ball into the box that caused panic inside the Kenya Police penalty area.

In the resulting scramble, Adukwaw reacted quickest to the loose ball and smashed home the equaliser in the 86th minute to rescue a valuable point for Gor Mahia.

The late goal ensured K’Ogalo avoided defeat, but the result means they must wait a little longer before officially reclaiming the FKF Premier League crown.

Gor Mahia still remain firmly in control of the title race with three matches left to play, although AFC Leopards still have a game in hand that could keep the pressure alive.

For Kenya Police, the draw extended their impressive unbeaten run to nine matches and lifted them to 52 points, further underlining their remarkable rise as one of the league’s most improved teams this season.

Despite failing to secure victory, the Law Enforcers delivered another strong performance and showed they are capable of competing with the very best sides in the league.

Starting Lineups:
