Bayer Leverkusen secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Union Berlin, extending their unbeaten league run to match a record of 28 consecutive matches. With a commanding 16-point lead at the top of the table and only six matches remaining, they are on the verge of clinching their first league title.

Under the leadership of Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen has remained undefeated in all 41 matches across competitions this season. A win against Werder Bremen at home in the upcoming week could see them lift their maiden Bundesliga title and their first trophy in 31 years.

Their impressive performance also signals a potential end to Bayern Munich's 11-season dominance in the league, with Bayern having won every Bundesliga title since 2013.

Currently standing at 76 points with six games left to play, Leverkusen has firmly positioned themselves at the top, while second-placed Bayern Munich is anchored on 60 points following a surprising 3-2 defeat to Heidenheim, marking their second consecutive league loss.

From the outset, the visitors applied pressure on Union, dominating play. Despite numerous opportunities, they had to wait until the dying moments of the first half for Florian Wirtz to slot home a penalty.

Just moments prior, Union suffered a setback as Robin Gosens received a second yellow card and was sent off.

With a player advantage, Leverkusen maintained control in the second half, while Union failed to mount a comeback. Leverkusen comfortably secured the victory, effortlessly maintaining their unbeaten streak and equalling the league record.
