The visitors dominated from the outset, with Ferran Torres opening the scoring after Kevin de Bruyne got in behind the Marseille defence and squared for a tap-in.
Oleksandr Zinchenko clipped the outside of a post with a neat strike from the edge of the box as City pushed to get a second before half-time.
Marseille rarely troubled Ederson in the City goal. Nemanja Radonjic's speculative effort from 30 yards was easily saved, while Florian Thauvin hit the outside of a post after the break, although Ederson had it covered.
As the hosts tired, City stepped up a gear and wrapped up the win in style as Ilkay Gundogan stabbed in from Raheem Sterling's knockdown before Sterling tapped home from another De Bruyne assist.

Liverpool back three points, taking their tally in the group two six from six. That’s pretty much the only positive for them from this dreary game in which they lost another centreback to injury.
Fabinho will no doubt be assessed tomorrow but looks set to be out for a few weeks, at least. Rhys Williams did fine after coming on for the Brazilian in the first half here but Liverpool still looked ropey in defence and might even have let the win slip if Dreyer had taken one of the two good chances he had.
Of the players who got rare starts, Jota netted a goal and Shaqiri was semi-decent, but Minamino and Origi offered little. Alexander-Arnold was Liverpool’s best player.
Frank Lampard's side began their Group E campaign with a goalless home draw against Sevilla last week, but put four on the board against Krasnodar.

The 19-year-old Greenwood gave Manchester United the lead in the 21st minute at Old Trafford when he slotted home a cool finish into the bottom-right corner after he was put through by Pogba’s perfectly-weighted pass.
Two quick-fire goals from Marcus Rashford, who came on for Greenwood in the second half, helped to secure a solid victory for hosts Manchester United, with the striker netting in the 74th and 78th minutes.
Anthony Martial then made it 4-0 to the hosts when he converted his penalty in the 86th minute at Old Trafford, before Rashford completed an impressive hat-trick with a fine finish in stoppage time to make it 5-0.
