Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth £62.5 million, signaling a fresh era under new manager Ruben Amorim.

The 26-year-old, who scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 33 Premier League games last season, becomes United’s first major acquisition of the summer rebuild. Subject to visa clearance and final registration, Cunha’s arrival marks a crucial step in Amorim’s plans to reshape the Red Devils' struggling frontline.

Cunha underwent his medical last week and was seen at Manchester’s Lowry Hotel on Sunday alongside his pregnant wife, Gabriela, just hours before the announcement. A club statement confirmed the agreement with Wolves, who will receive the transfer fee in three instalments of £20.85 million over the next two years, after rejecting a longer five-year payment structure.

The Brazilian joins United after a prolific stint at Molineux, where he scored 33 goals in 92 appearances following his initial loan from Atletico Madrid in January 2023. He made the move permanent that summer for a fee of around €40m (£35m).

Despite signing a new four-year deal with Wolves in February, Cunha had made his ambitions clear.
"I've made it clear that I need to take the next step," he said in March. "I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential."

That ambition aligns perfectly with Amorim’s vision. With United finishing last season with just 44 league goals — their lowest ever tally in the Premier League era — strengthening the attack has become an urgent priority. Cunha’s goal tally last season outshone any United player, with Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo sharing the club’s top scorer title at just eight goals apiece.

Cunha is also in line to inherit the No. 10 shirt, potentially replacing Marcus Rashford, who along with Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho, is rumored to be on the club’s transfer list. Amorim is expected to operate with a lean budget of around £125 million plus player sales, with United still targeting another forward, a creative midfielder, and a second striker. Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford) and Liam Delap (Ipswich) have emerged as options, though Delap seems Chelsea-bound.

As he departs Wolves, Cunha shared a heartfelt farewell:
"Individually, it was the best season of my life. I became the Brazilian with the most goals in a Premier League season, alongside Firmino and Martinelli. I made mistakes and got things right, but always gave everything for this club. Thank you for all the affection."

He also gifted Rolex watches to his Wolves teammates Joao Gomes and Andre, a token of appreciation for their time together.

With Amorim ready to usher in a new chapter at Old Trafford, Cunha’s arrival is not just a signing — it’s a statement. Manchester United mean business.
