Harambee Stars Fall to Estonia on Penalties After Draw
- Kenya’s Harambee Stars suffered a painful shootout defeat to Estonia after a 1-1 draw, with Richard Odada missing the decisive penalty in Kigali.
Harambee Stars endured a frustrating night in Kigali after falling to Estonia national football team in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in their FIFA Series clash.
Head coach Benni McCarthy handed starting debuts to England-born Zechariah Obiero and Frank Odhiambo, signalling a bold approach as Kenya looked to build a new identity.
Estonia began the match on the front foot, controlling possession and dictating tempo in the early exchanges. Their early intent nearly paid off in the 7th minute when Michael Larsen fired just wide after finding space inside the box.
Kenya responded midway through the first half when Aboud Omar’s well-struck free-kick forced goalkeeper Karl Vallner into a sharp save. However, Estonia soon capitalised on a set-piece situation to take the lead.
Kevor Palumets delivered an in-swinging corner that found Tanel Tammik unmarked, and the defender made no mistake with a powerful header to put Estonia ahead.
Kenya struggled to find rhythm in the first half, with attacking moves breaking down in the final third. Job Ochieng, one of the brighter performers, was later forced off due to injury, further disrupting the team’s momentum.
Richard Odada also entered the referee’s book after a heavy challenge, adding to Kenya’s difficulties before the break.
The Harambee Stars returned with renewed energy in the second half and quickly found a breakthrough. Obiero produced a precise through ball that split the Estonian defence, allowing Ryan Ogam to latch onto it and finish clinically from close range.
The equaliser lifted Kenya’s confidence, and McCarthy responded with tactical changes, introducing Austin Odhiambo, Chrispine Erambo, and Lawrence Okoth in search of a winner.
Okoth came closest to sealing victory but saw his effort narrowly miss the target after striking the post. Late drama followed when a defensive mix-up involving Alphonce Omija and goalkeeper Ian Otieno nearly gifted Estonia another goal, though Omija recovered just in time.
With neither side able to find a winner, the match proceeded to penalties.
Otieno gave Kenya hope by saving Ioan Yakovlev’s spot-kick, but missed penalties from Mohamed Bajaber and Richard Odada proved costly. Odada’s failed Panenka attempt ultimately handed Estonia the victory.
The defeat means Kenya will now face the loser of the clash between Grenada national football team and Rwanda national football team in their next fixture.
Despite flashes of promise, Harambee Stars will need to address their finishing and composure as they continue their preparations under McCarthy.
