Liverpool have opted against pursuing Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso as Jurgen Klopp's successor, sources informed ESPN. Instead, Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi and Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim are considered top contenders for the managerial position at Anfield.
Alonso, a former Liverpool player and Champions League winner in 2005, is close to leading Bayer Leverkusen to their inaugural Bundesliga title this season.
In January, Klopp publicly declared his intention to leave his position as Liverpool manager this summer, having informed the club of his decision back in November. With this announcement, Alonso had risen as the prime candidate to join Anfield, given his history with the club as a player and his notable achievements at the BayArena.
Moreover, with Bayern Munich also in need of a new manager following Thomas Tuchel's departure from the Allianz Arena at the season's end, Alonso had emerged as the frontrunner for the Bavarian role as well.
De Zerbi, whose Brighton side is set to visit Anfield in the Premier League this Sunday, enjoys significant backing from the Liverpool hierarchy.
Although De Zerbi's impressive performance with Brighton has positioned him as the primary choice, Sporting coach Amorim is also viewed as a credible candidate to step into Klopp's shoes.
