Manchester United's pursuit of Champions League qualification and FA Cup glory faces a daunting challenge amidst a defensive crisis sparked by injuries to Lisandro Martínez and Victor Lindelöf.

Currently sixth in the table with 48 points, Erik ten Hag's squad trails Aston Villa by 11 points and Tottenham by nine (with a game in hand), ahead of their upcoming clash against Chelsea on Thursday. Both Martínez and Lindelöf will be sidelined for at least a month, forcing them to miss a string of crucial fixtures including the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry on April 21.

Martínez's absence is particularly significant given his status as one of ten Hag's primary defenders. His recent return from a knee injury suffered in February against West Ham was cut short by this latest setback, further hampering United's defensive stability.

Notably, Martínez had endured a previous five-month absence starting from mid-September due to a serious foot injury, which also sidelined him for the latter stages of the previous season.

Lindelöf's absence further compounds ten Hag's defensive woes, leaving the manager without another experienced defender. The Swede had started in the recent match against Brentford, but another center-back, Harry Maguire, had to replace him after suffering an injury during the international break with England.

Additionally, injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have sidelined them, leaving Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Willy Kambwala as the only available recognized defenders. ten Hag may have to consider deploying Casemiro, who himself is returning from injury and was a substitute against Brentford, in central defense for the upcoming match against Chelsea.

A statement from Manchester United confirmed: "Victor Lindelöf and Lisandro Martínez will be sidelined for a minimum of one month due to muscle injuries.

"Lindelöf had to be substituted during the second half of last Saturday’s Premier League match against Brentford due to a hamstring issue.
