Gor Mahia will tackle the Mashemeji Derby without two key players after injuries ruled them out of the high stakes showdown against AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium.

Article Highlights

Gor Mahia will be forced into changes for Sunday’s 98th Mashemeji Derby after two influential players were ruled out through injury.

K’Ogalo host bitter rivals AFC Leopards aiming to bounce back from a shock 4-1 defeat to APS Bomet, with all eyes on securing three crucial points. While Gor Mahia have largely dominated the fixture in recent years, both meetings last season ended in draws, and Charles Akonnor’s side faces an added challenge this time.

Winger Bryson Wangai and midfield enforcer Lawrence Juma will miss the derby after picking up injuries in recent days, dealing a blow to Gor Mahia’s match preparations.

The club confirmed that Wangai is in the closing stages of recovery after sustaining an ankle injury during their 1-0 win over Tusker on November 22. Although the speedy winger is close to a return, the derby has come too soon for him.

Lawrence Juma, meanwhile, is undergoing rehabilitation after suffering a groin injury and has also been ruled out of selection for the weekend clash.

Despite those absences, Akonnor has been relieved to see the rest of his squad declared fit after a worrying incident earlier in the week. Austin Odhiambo, Felix Oluoch, Fidel Origa, Joshua Onyango, and Enock Morrison all escaped without injuries following separate road accidents.

Gor Mahia head into the derby sitting top of the FKF Premier League table with 19 points from nine matches, level with Kakamega Homeboyz. AFC Leopards occupy eighth place, five points behind, and will be eager to capitalize on their rivals’ injury setbacks.
